What you have now vs. what you're getting
Most homes here run on cable internet today. Google Fiber is a different kind of connection — and the difference is bigger than just "faster."

In short: today's connection is good enough for most things, but it's the ceiling. Fiber resets that ceiling far higher and gives the same fast speed in both directions — which matters more and more as people work from home, back up to the cloud, and run video on several devices at once.
Set your expectations: it's a cable install
Think of the install like a Comcast or Spectrum cable install. The technician will get fiber where it needs to go — but the standard install is functional, not invisible.
Expect fiber to be run up the side of the house, through the attic, and back down into the room where your equipment lives. Exterior cable along the eaves, an attic transition, and a visible jack are all normal. If you want a clean, hidden result, that's something you prepare for ahead of time — see Part 3.

A few things worth doing ahead of time
You don't have to do anything to get service — every home is on the plan. But a little preparation is the difference between "fast internet at the box" and "fast internet at every device."
Decide where your internet equipment should live Everyone
Pick a central spot — a wiring closet, office, or media area. Telling the tech where you want the fiber to land is the single most useful thing you can do.
Know your in-wall wiring may be the bottleneck Everyone
Older Cat5 / Cat5e cabling between rooms can choke a gig+ connection. The fiber line can be fast while your house quietly slows it down. Plan to upgrade the runs that matter most to Cat6 (or fiber).
Run conduit for a clean, hidden install For a clean setup
Install conduit (1" minimum, to allow for 90° bends) from the side of the house to your structured wiring cabinet. The tech can then simply pull fiber through it — no exterior cable showing, fiber appearing right where your gear is. Several neighbors have already done exactly this.
Plan your Wi-Fi for whole-home coverage For a large home
A single router struggles to cover a large home. A modern mesh or multi-access-point system (Wi-Fi 6 or newer) delivers the speed you're paying for into every corner. Google Fiber includes a Wi-Fi router that's fine for many homes; larger or higher-performance homes will want their own system.
